CAYUCOS — Did you know that sea glass comes from mermaid’s tears? It’s true. Those colorful baubles you find strewn along the sandy shores of oceans come from the tears of lovelorn mermaids. You can learn more about it by attending the Cayucos Sea Glass Festival from March 9-10 at the Cayucos Pier.
This popular event is in its ninth year and attracts visitors from all over the country. It is a weekend of local artisan goods, fun in the sun, live music, and an extensive marketplace of some of the finest sea glass art. Whether a sea glass fan or someone looking to learn about this world-wide hobby, the festival has something for everyone. Vendors are juried and the artwork is first-class.
It all starts with the Mermaid Ball on Friday, March 8, under the tent at the end of the pier. With a DJ spinning songs folks will enjoy dancing the evening away. It’s a Mermaid Ball so guests are expected to attend wearing their finest mermaid costume. A prize for Best Mermaid and Best Mermaid-Merman Couple will take place. Don’t want to be a mermaid? Dress up like a pirate or any sea creature. Food and drinks will be on hand for purchase and a tasty chowder cook-off rounds out the fun. Cost for the Ball is $25 per person and this event is for anyone over 21 years of age. Funds from the Mermaid Ball go to the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce for the July 4th fireworks celebration.
Check out the Festival’s outdoor local marketplace from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Come enjoy food, beer
Local Morro Bay business Beads by the Bay and Garden Shop is participating in the Cayucos Sea Glass Festival. Teacher Millie Chalk will demonstrate wire wrapped sea glass techniques, and owner, Susan Stewart is offering tools and tool kits for sale as well as craft wire for creating these unique art pieces! Be sure to visit their booth on Saturday, March 9 or Sunday, March 10.
“Recommendation for locals: go on Sunday — this popular event has thousands of visitors all weekend, but Saturday gets slammed,” commented Stewart. “This is a great opportunity to encourage sea glass fans to also explore the community of Morro Bay too. And it’s a good time to get a beautiful sea glass creation from one of the many artists at the show.”
