Summer fun at Art Center Morro Bay

Are your creative juices flowing? If so, the Art Center is where you want to be this summer. There are art classes for young people, workshops for families, and just plain fun coloring for everyone.
The Morro Bay Art Association is pleased to present art classes with Diana Tabarez for young people and families. Summer art programs are designed to get students excited about art and help them learn new skills and techniques. Mediums include painting, drawing, clay, printmaking, mixed media, and more. Prior experience is not necessary to participate. All art supplies are provided. Lessons are subject to change based on student’s interest and energy.
Children ages seven to 10 can attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays in morning sessions from 7 to 1 a.m. Afternoon sessions for ages 11 to 14 are from 1 to 3 p.m.
Classes will meet June 20, 22, 27, 29; July 6, 11, 13; Aug. 1, 3, 8, 10 and cost is $20 per class, includes materials or $165 per student for full summer class schedule of 11 days.
Saturday workshops for families, friends, and young children will be held July 8, 15, 22, 29, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost $30 per family.
Diana Tabarez is an alumnus of Morro Bay High School and graduate of University of California, Davis, with a Bachelor of Art degree in Art Studio and minor in Education. Diana also studied Art Studio in France and exhibited her artwork at several venues including the Chancellor’s Honorary Show in 2015. She has painted three murals with youths from elementary and junior high schools in Davis and Sacramento. She has spent many hours as an elementary school teacher’s assistant interacting with children during after school programs and giving independent art lessons. Her real talent lies in helping young students discover the magic of art.

Other adult workshops offered this summer are Portrait Practice with Live Models with Bob Rodgers. This workshop begins on Tuesday June 6 and continues through September 26 at 6 to 9 p.m. You can attend weekly for 16 sessions or partner up with another and attend eight sessions bi-monthly. Models will sit during two consecutive weeks in the same clothing and pose. Models rotate every other week. Fees are 16 weeks for $160 for members and $190 for non-members and eight weeks for $80 for members and $110 for non-members. All fees must be paid in advance. Succulent Saturday is a workshop on June 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where you will construct round wreaths out of succulents or paint a birdhouse or add corks to a planter and then plant it with succulents. Joan Martin Fee will guide you along and everything except corks is included. Prices are $70 for 13-inch round wreath, $90 for 15-inch round wreath, $90 for 15-inch heart wreath, $55 for Cork Planter, and $70 for Birdhouse. On Saturday, June 17 the Ocean Theme Mosaic Class will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Joan Martin Fee. You’ll learn the ins and outs of tempered glass and mosaicking. No experience is required. Tempered glass, real starfish or seashells, glass baubles, tools, grout and an eight-inch square wood base for the starfish wall art or a 10-inch round MDF mirror base are provided. Class fees are $65 for Starfish Wall Art and $80 for Starfish Mirror. Members of Art Center Morro Bay should contact Fee for discount information. “All Important Value in Your Pastel Landscapes” will be a two-day workshop given by award winning artist Clark Mitchell on June 23 and 24 from 9:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Cost is $250 for members and $275 for non-members. Last but not least, Free Adult Coloring Book Club meets every Friday morning from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Art Center Morro Bay. All community members are invited to relax and unwind with the new adult coloring books. Bring your own coloring book or get started with a page from the Center.
