Each year there is a worldwide celebration of the United Nations sponsored “Peace One Day” on Sept. 21. While International Peace Day is scheduled for only that one day, this year peace events around the world have been extended to encompass the entire week of Sept. 16 through Sept. 24.
Yes We Can Peacebuilders/Nonviolent Cities Project is taking part by presenting a “Celebration of Peace, Justice, and Nonviolence” on Saturday, September 23rd. This event will take place during Farmer’s Market at Grandma’s Frozen Yogurt and Waffle Shop at 307 Morro Bay Boulevard. Grandma Beverly has graciously offered us her space to invite families, children of all ages, and anyone interested in promoting peace in our world to come out and enjoy frozen yogurt while we sing, play games, and demonstrate in support of racial justice, women’s rights, and end to poverty, discrimination, environmental destruction, and war.
Families are encouraged to have their children do drawings of what their ideas of a peaceful world looks like. A contest with prizes will take place to find the best drawing of peace. Other games may consist of playing Pin Peace on the World. We will sing uplifting songs and invite our audience to join in. This will be a fun afternoon from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. to extend the culture of peace to Nonviolent Morro Bay!
Yes We Can Peacebuilders is pleased to have members of the Women’s March San Luis Obispo, Together We Will/The Huddle/Indivisibles, and other peace and nonviolent organizations joining in for this celebration.
“A Culture of Peace is a set of values, attitudes, modes of behavior and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups and nations.” –UN Resolutions A/RES/52/13: Culture of Peace and A/53/243 Declaration and programme of action on a Culture of Peace.
